ARRAY Program Director Analyzes Managing Information With a Four-Generation Crew Back to top

Article in Information Management by Teresa Schoch, Program Director at Array Information Technology

Greenbelt, MD, September 4, 2012 Teresa Schoch analyzes the challenge of managing information records with employees in four generations. She succinctly compares the organizational effort to being “tantamount to turning a ship around.” Fundamentally, she says it’s a change in the “organization’s workflow at a core level,” requiring everyone who participates in creating information to accept some responsibility. Making this task more difficult is the fact that the “ship’s crew” is composed of four generations with different motivators, values, and personal issues. She describes strategies for getting everyone, from traditionalists and boomers to Generations X and Y, on board the ship in cooperative teams.

To find out how to “map the ship’s route” by developing an effective, organization-wide education program for all generations, read the full article in Information Management.

ARRAY’S Insight on Twitter and Federal Social Media

Greenbelt, MD, August 21, 2012 In this perspective written for AOL Government, Colleen Hope, Information Architect at Array Information Technology, discusses how the federal government was well positioned to evolve with the revolutionary impact of Twitter and other social media upon public affairs. It was able to build upon the 2004 creation of the Federal Web Managers Council and federal guidelines for the web so that the new agency social media efforts were not developing in a vacuum. Federal web managers already were working together to craft guidelines for rapidly changing technologies and share best practices.

ARRAY’S Perspective on Strategy of the Federal Social Network

Greenbelt, MD, July 15, 2012 In Part Two of a three-part series on the Federal web, Colleen Hope, Information Architect at Array Information Technology, gives CMSWire perspective on the background of the “strategic elements upon which today’s Federal social network is built.” First, the public and private sectors face many of the same issues. However, federal agencies differ by documenting and sharing strategies. The Federal Web Council is a case in point and maintains great resources at howto.gov . According to Hope, not only are social sharing and best practices in place through the Council, they are used from one Administration to the next so that the “commitment to transparency and successful customer experience remains.” Read more in this article about what federal agencies are doing and the “Fed’s Social Tool Box.”

A/V Integration Pain Points: ARRAY’s VTC Practice Manager Gives Insight to CorporateTechDecisions

Greenbelt, MD, June 04, 2012 CorporateTechDecisions went to Wayne Hoffman, VTC Practice Manager in Array Information Technology, for ARRAY’s advice on issues triggered by integrating any A/V component or system in an IT network. Experts, both within and outside the company, should provide input on the type of network architecture changes needed for integration. One issue that Wayne points out is that you need to be concerned that responding to pushes for the latest firmware version could “fix a lot of bugs” but also “introduce a lot.” So you need to read the release notes to see if it will actually fix the problems you’re having. If not, “then maybe you don’t need to upgrade.”

ARRAY Executive Contributes to Analysis of Border Patrol’s New National Strategy Back to top

Jay Kalath Quoted in HSToday’s Overview

Greenbelt, MD, May 16, 2012 The Border Patrol’s first new strategy in 8 years has been released. In short, it no longer is based on an outdated methodology of determining whether the number of apprehensions of illegal aliens means a more secure border, but rather on what the agency needs to be doing better to deal with the new security environment.

Jay Kalath, Vice President, General Manager for National Security Operations and Chief Technology Officer, points out that there are big changes in the strategy. He said that “there will be more integrated data analysis related to border situational awareness” to effectively use intelligence and trend analysis in real time. And, as the architect of an innovative project for the Border Control, he is well placed to comment on the advanced collaboration technologies that have just been designed to keep the northern border secure without hampering trade and travel. For more on the new strategy and related congressional testimony by the General Accounting Office, see HSToday.

ARRAY Information Technology Executive Invited by U.S. Air Force to Present at Vendor Exchange Forum Back to top

Jon Dittmer Presented Tips for Small Businesses to Enhance their Competitive Position

Greenbelt, MD, April 16, 2012 – – Array Information Technology (ARRAY) announced today that Jon Dittmer, Vice President, Defense Solutions, was invited by the U.S. Air Force to present at the Air Force Program Executive Officer, Business and Enterprise Systems, Vendor Exchange Forum, on April 4, 2012. Mr. Dittmer participated in a panel discussion with other industry leaders to present best practices for small businesses to enhance their competitive position.

The forum focused broadly on the lifecycle acquisition for business IT, and was designed to encourage industry partners to team up and collaborate to come up with the best solutions to help the Air Force in its mission to Acquire, Operate, Sustain and Enable IT capabilities for our nation's war fighters. ARRAY supports multiple projects with the U.S. Air Force across its entire line of service offerings, from web and application development, enterprise application services, and infrastructure management.

In his presentation, Mr. Dittmer elaborated on the following points and best practices on how small businesses can be more competitive and effective in today’s market.

  • Make Small Business Competitions a Priority – Directed awards are important when a small business (SB) is young but they don’t sufficiently prepare the recipient for the real world. Large number of very capable SBs struggle to make the transition from a SB because too many programs know only two strategies: directed awards or full-and-open competitions. A small business competition using the right NAICS can deliver large-scale performance.

  • Forge Strategic Partnerships -- Many small businesses will never make the transition to the next level without large business partnerships to offset the cost of doing business. The relationship between the large/small businesses helps the small business grow in many ways through experience, making them more competitive over the long-haul.

  • Practice Open Communications to Reduce Cost Of B&P – Many programs are reluctant to share pre-decisional information with industry. However, the more industry understands about the program and the status/direction of an acquisition, the more responsive industry can be in the proposal, leading to higher levels of competition. If the only team with up-to-date program information is the incumbent, they have an unfair advantage, and competition is decreased.

Mr. Dittmer is head of the Defense Business Unit at ARRAY. He is a proven defense information technology executive who brings more than 25 years of information technology acquisition and management experience. He is highly adept at driving increased capability and mission success for major Defense programs.

Records Management Challenges in Government Back to top

ARRAY Highlight:
Records Management Challenges in Government

Greenbelt, MD – March 26, 2012 – The ever-changing digital world continually challenges federal government efforts to establish effective records management. Array Information Technology works to help the government meet a wide range of challenges presented by technology, regulations, and personnel.

Mike Miller, Director of the Records and Information Management Practice at Array Information Technology, recently has analyzed the “new twist” on the government paper trail. He wrote that federal agencies must think broader and more collaboratively after a Presidential Memorandum to reform records management issued in November 2011.
In March 2012, agency self-assessments are due that will lead to a directive on improving records management in six areas, including transitioning to electronic record-keeping. This is a major challenge, since only a few agencies have implemented electronic record-keeping, and many maintain files, including email, in hard copy. Indeed, National Archives regulations themselves still have a strong paper bias.
For more of the fundamental challenges facing the government in record-management, see Mike’s article for Nextgov: Technology and the Business of Government. Technology and the Business of Government.

ARRAY Information Technology’s 15th Anniversary: Success in Applied Innovation Back to top

Interview with Founder and CEO Brian Leung

Greenbelt, MD – January 31, 2012– ARRAY’s Social Media Team interviews Brian Leung, Founder and CEO of Array Information Technology, as the company begins its 15th year. Brian established the business in 1997 in Rockville, Maryland, and then moved the company to its current headquarters in Greenbelt, Maryland. ARRAY now operates nationwide and overseas..

Q. ARRAY celebrates its 15-year anniversary as 2012 begins. What in your background helped you the most as you developed the company?
A. I grew up in a working class family. My father worked very hard in a factory to raise nine children. I learned that there is no free lunch; you must work hard and smartly to earn your reward. Professionally, my 12 years working in Multimax—which grew from a very small company to one with 300 people—educated and equipped me to do IT business with the U.S. Government.

Q. What has been your key challenge?
A. Graduating from the Small Business 8(a) program in 2011 was a key challenge. To prepare for this transition, we successfully developed a strong leadership team over the past 3 years.

Q. ARRAY has received many awards and certifications over the past 10 years with its dramatic growth. What do you think has led to this success?
A. We would not have this success if we didn’t have employees who made sacrifices and worked with dedication and commitment. There’s no doubt that our employees are the stars and the reason behind these awards.

Q. What are you hoping for ARRAY in next 15 years?
A.Fifteen years is a major milestone for ARRAY, but it is still relatively young in the IT Federal space. We are going through a transitional period today from a small to a mid-size company. I hope that many of our employees will grow their careers within ARRAY over the next 10-15 years. By that time, my goal is that ARRAY is recognized by its peers and customers as a premier IT consulting company and continues its high standards of integrity and trustworthiness.
